Transition Processes from Preschool to School
To ensure a happy and successful transition, between preschool and school, a series of orientation visits and meetings are arranged over Term 4.
These sessions provide an opportunity for parents to learn more about school programs and for students to become familiar with basic school routines so they can make a confident start to school.
Parent Meetings.
While children are taking part in their first 2 transition sessions parents are invited to attend information sessions to learn more about the school and its programs.
In these two important meetings parents:
The Student Orientation Visits
Three student session usually take place in early December in weeks 7, 8 of Term 4
The first two meeting run from 9.00 - 10.40 am
The third meeting runs from 9.00 - 12:00 noon.
During these meetings children are:
Participating fully in this program provides both parents and students with a smooth and successful transition into the school environment.
The continuity of learning and transition processes between The Ardtornish Children's Centre and Ardtornish Primary School are desgined to enhance a child’s wellbeing and ability to succeed in the school setting in their Foundation year.
The ‘Same First Day Start’ policy, where there is only one intake into school ad preschools has been operational since 2014.

To do this the Ardtornish Primary School and Ardtornish Childrens' Centre:
Leadership representatives and class/preschool teacher/s meet with DECD support services to review information pertaining to children with significant learning and developmental needs. A modified and/or extended program to support continuity of learning may be negotiated at this time.
When appropriate we organise visits of relevant staff to observe children in their current settings prior to children and students starting orientation visits. This must be negotiated with site leaders and teaching staff.
Information shared across sites about individual children reflect the child and student as a learner.

- are provided with on overview of the reception literacy and numeracy programs and how as parents they can support their child to make a good start to reading and writing.
- can clarify any questions they have about the school’s programs and procedures
- are shown how to configure their smart phones so you can receive notifications about school events.
- meet the Reception teaching team and learn about the philosophy that guides their practice.
The Student Orientation Visits
Three student session usually take place in early December in weeks 7, 8 of Term 4
The first two meeting run from 9.00 - 10.40 am
The third meeting runs from 9.00 - 12:00 noon.
During these meetings children are:
- Familiarised with the layout of the school e.g. the location of the gym, library, hall, canteen and specialist rooms.
- Taught some basic class routines and school responsibilities.
- Shown where the toilets are and what play equipment they can use.
- Provided with some FUN activities so they have a positive introduction to the school classroom environment.

- Make continuity of learning across all learning environments inclusive and as seamless as possible for children, students and families.
- Ensure that children, students and families feel well informed, reassured and confident transitioning between all educational settings throughout their learning journey.
To do this the Ardtornish Primary School and Ardtornish Childrens' Centre:
- Share information for all new families enquiring about enrolling children and students at their site.
- actively seek information about the perspectives of children and families through transitions. This information is utilised locally to inform the improvement cycle in relation to transition and continuity of learning and meet the needs of individual children and families.
- Schedule transition meetings with all families of new enrolling children and students in term 4 of each year.
- Encourage families to register children by Term 2 of the year PRIOR to school or preschool.
