Ardtornish Dance Sports

Picture
Students in years 2-7 at Ardtornish have the chance to participate in our extra-curricular dance programme.

Dance sports have a long history at Ardtornish primary school and in recent years have expanded to include multiple teams across age groups and different genres of dance.

The dance styles currently offered are hip-hop, poms and drill cheer, aerobics and jazz/theatrical.

We employ hourly paid instructors to run lessons in the school hall, out of school hours. Most classes run directly after school on weeknights and some on Saturday mornings.

Each year we hold try-outs in term 3 to gauge interest and ability levels. We encourage all children interested (boys and girls) to have a go. While some dance skills are important, it is more important that the children are willing to practise and be committed to their team. Teams work together each week, during term time, on their skills and a routine that is performed at competition level in the May and June of the following year.

Some years our teams are invited to perform at a national level in Queensland. This trip is funded by parents and is optional.
We charge a term fee to cover the cost of instructors, entry fees and the end of year celebration. We also charge a fee for costumes. We try to keep all costs as accessible as possible.

Examples of our recent successes include:
2018-National bronze medal in Open Aerobics. State gold medal for open aerobics and silver medals for hip hop, dance and primary cheer.

2017-National bronze medals for primary theatrical dance and primary cheer. State gold medals for cheer and dance and a bronze medal for hip hop.

Dance at Ardtornish allows children to develop their friendships, teamwork, fitness, co-ordination and self-confidence.
Their smiles as they come off stage and the support dancers offer to their teammates is concrete evidence of this.

If your child is interested in participating in dance sports, keep your eyes open in term 3 when details about tryouts will be published on Google+, skoolbag, the newsletter and on print posters around our school.
